*NEW ARCHBISHOP OF BANGALORE: MOST REV. PETER MACHADO: 19th March 2018 (Solemnity of St Joseph)*

Pursuant to the resignation of Archbishop, Most Rev. Bernard Moras as the Archbishop of Bangalore, which was accepted today, Most Rev. Peter Machado, Bishop of Belgaum has been appointed as the Archbishop of Bangalore by His Holiness, Pope Francis. The announcement came in the Vatican today (March 19, 2018) at noon (16.30 p.m. IST).

Most Rev. Peter Machado, son of Aveline and the late Anthony Machado hails from Honnavar in Uttara Kannada district. Born on May 26, 1954 in his native town, he joined St. Michael's Seminary, Belgaum, before completing his matriculation. He continued his high school studies at St. Paul's High School in Belgaum and was later sent to Papal Seminary in Pune for philosophical and theological studies. He holds a commerce degree from Pune University.  He was ordained a priest on Dec. 8, 1978, for the Diocese of Karwar. He holds a doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome.

He was appointed Bishop of Belgaum by the then Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI on February 2, 2006 and Ordained a Bishop at Belgaum on March 30, the same year. His 12 years’ service as the Bishop of Belgaum saw great pastoral, educational and developmental activities in the diocese. Number of new churches built, education institutions, both the schools and institutes of higher learning, newly started and the social work projects taken up, bear witness to this.

He is very fast mover without needing much rest, has very high typing speed, fruitful multi tasker, intellectually a great thinker, a vociferous reader, keeping abreast of the latest, excellent communicator and a great orator. His great achievement was when he headed the Laity Commission of the Karnataka Regional Bishops and started the Catholic Council of Karnataka to have an active laity. He is a protagonist of the family mission and headed the Commission for Families at the Karnataka Region for many years. These qualities will help him in facing the challenges as the Archbishop of Bangalore.

He was appointed as our Indian National Ecclesiastical Adviser on 28 April 2012 by Conference of Catholic Bishops of India. He headed the Indian delegation to the International WAF General Assembly in Nov 2012. He chaired our Indian National meeting in Goa on 21 Nov 2012 and 18 Nov 2015. He animated us to go to various Dioceses to spread the Fatima message in preparation for the Fatima Centenary. He travelled to Calcutta, Krishnagar, Goa, Bathery: Kerala, Warangal and Bangalore for this. He introduced the WAF at the CBCI meeting in Feb 2016.

He obtained Holy Father’s Indulgence, Marian Year declaration and Papal blessing for his Diocese, as the Patron is Our Lady of the family Rosary of Fatima. He encouraged the Fatima Centenary Statue Pilgrimage to all Indian States in Nov 2017. The World Apostolate of Fatima, Indian National Council is proud that its National Ecclesiastical Adviser will be heading the Church in Karnataka.

We pray for his good health and fruitful ministry. Ad multos annos.

Yours Sincerely in Christ and the Blessed Virgin of Fatima,
