Bishop Peter is the Bishop of Belgaum and also the Ecclesiastical Advisor to the National WAF appointed by the Conference of Catholic Bishops’ of India. In the homily, he mentioned that Goa has a special role as Goa was still a part of Portugal when the Apparitions took place. He mentioned about the Fatima Shrine theme: ‘My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge, the way that will lead you to God’. He then focused on Our Blessed Mother urging the congregation to deepen their Marian devotion for peace in the families and the society. He summarised the Fatima Message focussing on 3 P’s: namely Peace, Prayer and Penance. “We all need peace,” he said, but questioned, “Is there real peace in our families and society today? Actually, there is selfishness and self-centredness among many especially leaders, resulting in frustration among the people.”

On prayer, he said that prayer is very important for peace to prevail. He said that Our Lady of Fatima is the Mother of prayer, and prayer can be fruitful by reflecting on the Word of God, frequent sacraments especially Holy Mass, visit to the Blessed Sacrament and recitation of Rosary. On penance, he said there is no victory without the cross and sufferings. Penance brings us closer to God and we stay united with Him in prayer.

The Celebration started at 3 pm with the Prayer to the Holy Spirit, St Michael’s Prayer and the 3 o’clock Prayer, followed by the Divine Mercy Chaplet led by Maria P Fernandes. Mr Francis Barreto then welcomed the congregation. Fr. Peter da Gama, Parish Priest of St Francis Xavier Church Duler and a zealous Fatima promoter then gave a Power Point Presentation with video clips on the Fatima message with special focus on the First Saturdays. Celine D’Souza then led the Adoration. This was followed by the Eucharistic celebration. After Mass, the Fatima Centenary Souvenir was released by Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao in the presence of Fr Conceicao D’Silva, the spiritual advisor for the Goa unit. ‘A New Method of Praying the Holy Rosary’ a book by Fr Joaquim Loiola Pereira, Archbishop’s Secretary was also released.

Fr Alfred Vaz, Parish Priest of the Cathedral then briefed on maintaining spirit of Prayer and Reparation for the candle lit Procession. 13 groups each of 8 members were organised to carry the Cathedrals’ statue of Our Lady of Fatima who had a chest dress. These were drawn from Doctors and Nurses from Goa Medical College, Couples for Christ, Legion of Mary North and South, St Inez, St Jerome’s Church Mapusa, St Joaquim Chapel Borda, Old Goa Youth, Holy Spirit Church Margao, Catholic Association of Goa, Society of St Vincent de Paul and many more. Children were dressed as Angels and processed near Our Lady. The procession terminated at the Marian square of the Cruz Milagres Church and the distance covered was 1.6 km. Rev Dr Henry Falcao made the final prayer and announced that a short video clip on the Retreat Centre would be screened. Archbishop then reminded about St Joseph Vaz’s letter of Bondage, gave the final blessing and the faithful then venerated Our Lady’s statue. They were then offered cake and soft drink before returning home.

The World Apostolate of Fatima Choir helped the congregation to pray by their soulful singing in Konkani and English. The WAF bookshop was displayed outside the Cathedral and then after the procession. There was a place for those who wished to join the WAF at the Pledge counter.  The main language was Konkani. Official images of the Saints Francisco and Jacinta were mounted on the Cathedral columns side of the main altar. Estimated faithful gathered was 3,000 to 4,000 with 25 Priests and many Parishes organised buses as pilgrimage. Many Churches and Chapels had their own celebrations. In spite of the sweltering heat, high humidity and low sound system at places, many offered in a spirit of prayer and penance.

On this same day, Pope Francis was Fatima as a pilgrim to take part in the Centenary celebrations of the Fatima Apparitions and also to canonize the two shepherd children.
